The Way Light Answers: An exhibition of paintings by Jan Sandman at Axel’s Gallery and Frame Shop through August 14, 2021.

The saying “practice what you preach” is exactly what you can expect from the work by Montpelier-based artist, Jan Sandman. Her professional life is spent helping clients find a deeper connection to themselves, their families and loved ones, their place in and connection to the universe. The work presented at Axel’s Gallery is her own personal journey into the very connection she guides others through.

“The Way Light Answers” is a body of work primarily created during the pandemic. These original cold wax and oil paintings are the result of purposely limiting her color palette and the self-discovery with such bounds. The results are soft, balanced colors and subtle compositions that will beg you to drift in and to linger. Sandman’s work is a like a quite conversation with the universe – a place that immediately feels natural and safe. She invites you to come in, to listen through your eyes, stay awhile and contemplate your place on earth.

When speaking of this collection of work, Sandman says “sometimes the paintings are landscapes, sometimes more abstract – depending on the dimension of where the answer lies.” She invites you to explore the body of original artwork at Axel’s Gallery from July 7 – August 14, 2021.

An opening artist reception is scheduled for Friday, July 9th from 6-8pm at Axel’s Gallery in historic downtown Waterbury. This event is free and open to the public. Come to the artist reception and be inspired!

With the exception of special events, Axel’s Gallery and Frame Shop is open Wednesday – Friday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm and Saturdays 10:00 – 4:00 pm.

Late Summer News

This late Spring I had the opportunity to participate in a collaborative creative movement project inspired by Hazel Turrone’s creative vision and exquisitely filmed by Andreas John (In the Hands of Beauty). A number of local people who are deeply grounded in movement gathered and collectively joined hearts to explore what it is to move in a time of social distancing during the Covid 19 pandemic in the presence of glorious Vermont Spring woods. I was asked to bring in ceremonial sound through the Gong, the Crystal singing bowls, the drum and the chimes as the movers tuned in to what was being called forward in them. Andreas John filmed, late afternoon into the darkness. Here is the link to this short beautiful film, best listened to through headphones if possible.

On another note, I have offered a couple of Authentic Movement workshops out of doors this summer and am currently in the process of considering some outdoor Authentic Movement classes for this fall. Please let me know if that interests you. I am seeing clients on a limited schedule indoors this summer and it is going very well. I continue to do work over the Zoom platform as well for those who are more comfortable working in that way.

I have been invited to be the featured artist in the Chaffee Art gallery in Rutland this September/October and am excited to be now choosing the cold wax paintings now which will be part of that show. I am very inspired by that medium.

I am hopeful for our world, for what needs to change to change, for what needs to fall away to do so, and for what needs to rise up and prevail to find its way to the surface as we ride the waves and currents of this very challenging time. As much as I am able, I stay focused on and in the light , the beauty, with my eyes and heart open, seeing, witnessing, feeling, as we move through the difficulties we are face. I am hopeful for our world.

Opening Doors

June 4, 2020

Dear Friends, Clients and Students,

Governor Scott gave the go ahead for my profession to return to practicing as of June 1.  I have spoken with several people who practice in the healing professions, acupuncturists, massage therapists, naturopaths, psychotherapists, healers of different sorts to see how everybody is doing, and what is being done to allow us to come together with ease and safety.  There are certain protocols that have been deemed necessary by the State of Vermont and are stated as safe practice by the Association of Bodywork and Massage Professionals and I will state them below.  Essentially we need to tread lightly, pay attention and be careful with each other.

Some of you are ready to come back and I will be welcoming you two days a week to start.
The sessions will be spaced 30-60 minutes apart so that the room can air out and the surfaces can be cleaned. I have acquired a HEPA air filter.  All hard surfaces will be cleaned after each session.

When you call (522-5032/229-4671) or email to make your appointment,  please self screen yourself by asking the following questions:

Have I had a fever in the last 24 hours, flu like symptoms, sore throat, cough,  shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, been diagnosed with Covid 19, been in contact with anyone who has been diagnosed or has the symptoms of Covid 19 in the past two weeks?

On the day of your appointment, please take your temperature that morning to assure that you are fever free. Please come with your own mask which will be worn in the building and throughout the appointment.  When you arrive for your appointment, please call or text me (522-5032).  I will come out of the building and greet you, with my mask on, ask you the same questions as the ones stated above.  Make sure I have your cell phone number and if you don’t have a cell phone, let me know ahead of time, and I will just come out at the designated time and greet you.

We will then go into the building  together and either wash hands or use hand sanitizer and go into my office.  Please bring your own water bottle.  I would prefer to settle payment and rescheduling at the beginning of the session if possible.  My rates are the same: sliding scale of $160-200 for the two hour session, based on self-determined financial capacity.

While my  24 hour cancellation policy remains the same, if you should develop symptoms of illness within that 24 hour window, there will be no charge for cancelling.
I am expecting that as the presence of the virus resolves, these protocols will change as well. But this is what they are as we begin.  Let’s see how it feels.

For those of you who are not ready to return, I have been offering sessions by Zoom and Facebook that have been very effective.  I am also offering Constellation work privately and private Authentic Movement sessions in the Movement Studio on Granite Street where I normally offer Authentic Movement classes and group Constellation workshops.  This space is very large and airy and with enough distance between us, which is very possible, it is possible at times to have masks off.The regular classes and workshops have not yet resumed but will at some point .

Please reach out with any questions or concerns.  I look forward to reconnecting.

Corona Virus

March 21, 2020

Today, I wake up not remembering  immediately what day it is.

Yesterday, I unexpectedly fall asleep and awaken wondering, what time is it?Where am I? Why am I sleeping? What’s next? What to plan for, what to accomplish, write, do, etc.

Oh, I remember—all of that has stopped.  I remember now.  The daily schedule has changed so radically, the patterns have ceased.

In life, patterns are fascinating phenomenon.  They set a tone, a rhythm for life to go forward and follow a path. The chambered Nautilus a perfect example, building, building, so perfectly on what has come before, nothing lost or discarded and yet no growth stopped  due to a constraining  pattern. The pattern is the way, the path.

We feel relief when there is a rhythm to follow.  Here we go— this is the way.  It may be our own pulse, or a pulse given, picked up, even sometimes imposed.  It may be the rhythm of a wise council or unwise council.

But when we go with it, we follow, we are in it and we move.  And in the movement, we can ascertain, this is good, this is the right path or something is amiss.  I/we are in a pattern that is off center.  In our day to day living, as we affect the planet, the harmful patterns have ceased, which is proving very beneficial to the earth.  Air travel slowed, car travel slowed, factory emissions slowed.  But the helpful structures have also ceased: work, schools, healthcare, life, causing deep disruption, fear, uncertainty.

Now, with this Corona Virus, all of this has ceased: no rhythm, no pattern, no this, no that.  We are stopping our patterns, helpful and harmful to listen deeply to an overriding pattern of the Corona Virus.

In astrology there are moments when the moon is Void of Course.  They are moments of the in-between, transitions from one sign to another.  They can be thought of as times when prayer is deeply felt and effective. In the Void of Creation, all things are possible, all possibilities are present but none yet chosen, no direction yet taken.

These times can be both terrifying and exhilarating for the sense of freedom or openness that comes with the falling apart of a known structure.

For example, when an unhealthy marriage finally crumbles, the marriage partners can experience a flurry of freedom before a new normal sets in.  When school lets out for the summer and the schedule is open, a relief until the openness becomes boredom or lack of structure without direction becomes harmful.

We are in a similar place to that now, imposed by a virus who we do not know.

I would also point out that the virus does not know us either.  It is a mutual meeting.  We do not know each other’s habits and patterns.  Scientists are scrambling to track the patterns to capture, contain, conquer the virus to save lives. The front line. I applaud them every moment.

Viruses are so intelligent and behave in surprisingly innovative ways.

I am feeling/sensing the presence of an innovative kind of viral mind of Humanity rising up in a good way: the minds of China, the minds of Russia, Italy, Egypt, Qatar, the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Africa, Brazil, the sub zero intelligence of Antarctica, all working together, letting the network of brain, mind, intelligence and spiritual understanding of what we are being tasked with to come together.  And through that, an understanding of the virus energies, so that our world can be at peace and balance with a new rhythm emerging that encompasses the networking viral energies of how to work together.

Our Earth is taking a breath.  It is breathing, flowing, benefitting, cleansing from this great pause that has been imposed upon our patterns,  The patterns that have been causing so much damage.

Let us leave a place for the structure of Life as we know it to reweave itself.

Within, deeper and deeper still, there is always an eternal  pulse, a rhythm of God that does not change, no matter the outer circumstance. It is steady, it is love, it is eternal.  May we all connect to the doorways, passageways, light, sound, color, that bring us exactly there.  At that point, we are not lost, we are never lost, never alone, but have ears listening like deep roots into the earth, like delicate golden tendrils into the skies for the Sound beyond Sound.

Here we are One and we go forward, leaving behind, of necessity what cannot be sustained and taking up the pieces of what is now here for us to reweave, recreate a new fabric.

If you are a person who meditates, may your practice deepen at this time, entering into the holy space of the Divine consciousness from your cushion.

If you are a person of Nature, may the sounds, the light, the moisture, the scents, the colors of  Nature move through your body and recalibrate your nervous system and spirit.

If you are a person who prays to any name of God or the nameless God, may the heartspace from where you pray feel the balance of giving and receiving, the breathing aliveness of prayer, asked and answered, asked and answered with constancy and ease.

If you are person, whose daily life is the prayer, the kindness, the actions, the compassion, the thoughtfulness, may you find reason every day to smile true smiles that light you up from the inside out.

If you are the artist, who turns to paper and pen, or canvas and paint, or camera, or clay or instrument to transform the unnameable into form, may you be protected and inspired to bring your vision forward.

If you are the mother or the father or the son or the daughter, the one who is caring for the cared for, may you turn to one another to see your own reflection and may you turn inward to understand that you are never alone, and may you have mercy on the all the moments of the day when you don’t know what to do, or what is next and know that you will be met in its unfolding  by the eternal pulse.

And if you are the doctor, the nurse, the healer, the laborer who facilitates what must come next, what is needed, may you receive grace in each moment.

And if you are the cared for, you are the teacher.

May all those we lose be wrapped in light

May our losses and grief be held by each other in kindness and compassion.

May our way forward be sourced from the deep, pure light of the Creator.

MidWinter News 2020

Cobblestone Beach, Grand Marais, Lake Superior

February 22, 2020

Dear Friends,

The light has changed and these past few days bring with them birdsong and melting snow. I am feeling and leaning into the change of season even though I know we have weeks of winter still ahead.

I just returned from Grand Marais and Lake Superior, where I taught an Authentic Movement Workshop and led a Family Constellation workshop. Both experiences were deep and wonderful; I felt very welcomed by the community. I must say that I was really taken in by the land and by the Lake itself. For weeks before I went I sensed the power of the Lake speaking to me , and now, back here in Vermont, Lake Superior’s shorelines, her waves, and ice floes are very much moving inside me, integrating. I am very grateful for this experience.

I had a very beautiful experience showing my paintings at The Garage Cultural Center in Montpelier and the Ava Gallery in Lebanon during the month of December. I am grateful to be able to express important and deep ways that my prayers for the Earth and Humanity come through my paintings. I will have another show in the Spring months for those who are interested. I will keep you posted on that.

On March 14, 2020, I will be holding another Family Constellation workshop in Montpelier at the Movement Center, Clothespin Factory where I practice and teach Authentic Movement. There are spaces for representatives available. The two focus client spots have filled. This is amazing and deep work and I highly recommend it. If you or anyone you know might benefit, it is worth the experience. The representatives receive deep healing movements as well. The work untangles and clears ancestral trauma, beliefs, entanglements. It is not uncommon for people to be carrying or trying to resolve issues that did not come from them but from generations before them. This work addresses that. In addition, it also puts one in touch with the great ancestral gifts, strengths and resources that are also sometimes blocked or hidden. March 14, 1:00-5:00, Preregistration ($35.00) necessary. Contact me at or 802 522-5032

I will be starting a new round of Authentic Movement classes in April. I will keep you updated. If any of you want to be specifically notified about constellation work, let me know as I have a mailing that goes out just for that when the workshops occur, I will add you to that list.

Wishing all of you harmony in the increasing brightness of the longer days, the lighter mornings, the lighter evenings, the days of continued cold even as the light shines brighter and at times, the dripping sounds of the melting snow.

Winter News

Welcome winter! Clear blue skies and white mountain tops tinged in pink. and here we are right in the beginning of December. I am looking forward to planning for the Winter classes and Workshops.

First of all, my paintings will be shown at the Garage Cultural Center in Montpelier for the month of December until January 12 in a show called Let It Bee. The show is a month long event in support of the Bees and other pollinators. My paintings are done with cold wax which is a beeswax product. The opening is Friday, December 6 from 4-7.

Secondly, each year I offer a Solstice Sound ceremony whose proceeds benefit the White Rose Foundation. The Gong ceremony will be offered on December 20th. Currently the registration is filled to capacity but if you would like to be placed on a waiting list in case places open up, email me at

I have been running a very deep and beautiful Authentic Movement Beginning class where we explore the basics of this important work. If you would like to register for the winter session, let me know by December 15. The classes are on Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 in Montpelier. I also offer Authentic Movement classes on Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9-11 in Montpelier. These classes are also open to new people depending upon availability of space although they are not beginning classes.

On January 18, 2020, I am offering a Family Constellation workshop from 1:00-5:00 in Montpelier. The cost to be a representative is $35.00 and to be a focus client $150.00. Let me know if you would like to register or know more. Some information on Constellation work is available on my website

I am planning to travel to Minnesota this deep winter to offer some Authentic Movement there in the Grand Marais Community and be near the majestic frozen Great Lakes.

Wishing you all joy as we go forward into the deep darkness and beyond , into the returning light.

Autumn News 2019

October has arrived and suddenly , it seems, the air has taken on the autumn chill.  My roses, however, which have given me endless joy all summer, are still blooming.  Frost has not yet hit.  The photograph above was taken on Prince Edward Island, the beach of red rock near where I stayed last summer.  It reminds me of New Mexico, and I have similar feelings about both places.  They call forward wild nature, vast silence, and an infinite peace.

This fall, my Wednesday and Thursday Authentic Movement classes are underway.  They will run through the Solstice and then will start back up again in January.  I am offering a Beginning Authentic Movement Series this fall which will begin on Wednesday evening October 30 and run for seven weeks from 6:30-8:30.  This is a wonderful opportunity to try out this form if you have ever wondered about it.  A great group formed already but there is room room for 2-3 more people. The cost is $140.00 for the seven week series.  Contact me if you are interested.

In November, I am offering a Family Constellation workshop.  This will happen on Saturday , November 16 from 1:00-5:00. You can find details in the calendar section of my website by clicking on that date.  This is really important work that cuts through entanglements in the energetic field of the family or system and allows healing and flow to begin or to restore.  It is powerful and it is real.  Often, we are carrying burdens that we cannot resolve because they do not belong to us.  This work deals with identifying and helping to resolve that. There is currently room for two people to present their constellation and have the group work with it and there are several spots open for representatives.  Contact me at to register.  Spread the word if you know others who would be interested.

I have recently been asked to go to Asheville NC and to Minnesota to offer  Constellation workshops and Authentic Movement workshops, so that may be coming up this winter.

I am always available for individual sessions.  These times are enormously open to change.  The energy is potent and very available.  I am in service to kindness and consciousness prevailing.

May our paths cross.

Summer Newsletter 2019

June , 2019

As we approach the Summer Solstice, I realize that I have not posted a newsletter yet this year and am surprised by that.  The year has been full.  Authentic Movement classes have been powerful and full.  I offered a Beginning class on Wednesday nights during the winter.  It was well attended and a beautiful beginning into the depth of this form.  If any of you are interested in practicing, please drop me a line and let me know.  It is through interest that the classes and workshops develop.

Kelley Hunter, astromythologist and I offered a workshop combining Authentic Movement and  the Astrology of Moving through the Eclipse Portal in the early part of the year.  We are currently planning another offering and the details will be formed soon.

I have offered several Family Constellation Workshops this year and will continue to do so.  These are usually offered on a Saturday afternoon in Montpelier, but not always.  If you have done this work, you know about its effectiveness and mystery in releasing inherited patterns and entanglements in ancestral and family systems.  If you haven’t yet tried it but want to or just want to know more, please give me a call and I am happy to talk about it with you.  I am planning to make some short videos to post that will address certain aspects.  I will post them on my website and on my Facebook page–Jan Sandman: Listening into the Center.  Constellation work can be done in a group and can also be done privately and over Skype or FaceTime.

In August, I will again be teaching at the New England Women’s Herbal Conference.  I will lead three workshops, one regarding Authentic Movement and Moving with the Plants, a Constellation workshop creating a Prayer for the Earth and the third, a Sound Healing Ceremony.   If you plan to go to the New England Women’s Herbal Conference this year, perhaps I will see you there.

Since March, I have been working in a new painting studio and loving it.  I just created a website for my art work and will be adding to it over time.  Here is the link in case you are interested.

And as always, you can contact me for private sessions.

I wish you all a glorious Summer Solstice.

Through the Eclipse Portal: Astrology and Authentic Movement

Moving through the Eclipse Portal: Astrology & Authentic Movement

with Jan Sandman & Kelley Hunter

In this workshop, we enter the field of the  Total Eclipse of the Moon on January 21st,a compelling opportunity to engage the energetic awakening, unexpected perspectives and surprising flashes of fresh developments on the horizon. The emotional desire of this Moon is to break through the eclipse shadows into the freedom of uncharted territory.

First, we feel our bodies into the present space. We then discuss current planetary patterns of the eclipse and how each person’s astrological chart may be impacted by this celestial gateway.

Our dive into Authentic Movement is a profound practice of accessing wisdom and inner knowing through trusting how the body wants to move from the inside out, with eyes closed. This wordless alignment of body, intuition and soul will open us to our unique inner guidance, for clearing and preparation for the year to come.

We bring language and visual expression back in, letting the stories and meaning be told, shown, written….

Let the resonance of the day linger through the Eclipse and onward. The pre-dawn sky inspires and conspires with a close alignment of the two most brilliant diamonds in the sky—Venus and Jupiter, Love and Wisdom.

Dear Friends ,

As summer winds down, today is warm, sunny, humid.  In a couple of days, the weather will shift: cooler days and nights.

I recently returned from the NE Women’s Herbal Conference where I offered an Authentic Movement workshop, beautifully attended in  a gorgeous space.  It was an honor to be part of this event and to help its beginning to happen through movement.I recognize Helen Ward, Melanie Carpenter and Laura Julie Krouse and their co-joined effort and success to create a very deep and powerful gathering.

My Authentic Movement classes will begin mid September after I return from the beauty of Prince Edward Island.  I have room for one  or two people in the Thursday class. (9-11:00 every Thursday until mid December) Contact me if you are interested or know someone who may be. The description is on my website.

October 20th, from 1:00-5:00 marks the date for the next Family Constellation workshop.  This is beautiful, effective and powerful work.  I highly recommend trying it as either a representative or a person presenting a constellation.  Again, I am free to answer any questions that you may have. or 802 522-5032  You will find the description on my website. I hope that the summer has been restorative for you all.  It has truly been active and very alive for me.  I have a passion for growing roses and waking to them each morning.  I will miss them as the weather turns.

I look forward to the many opportunities for connecting this autumn.

all the very best,
